Testing AI SDR opt-outs and human handoffs

Verify stop signals, exclusions, suppression, escalation, and context transfer across the full outbound workflow, not just one response.

01

A stop signal changes the whole workflow

An opt-out is not handled because one reply contains an apology. The signal must update persistent state, cancel queued follow-ups, prevent future sends through other paths, and remain visible when a different agent process resumes later.

Test direct and indirect language, channel changes, delayed processing, duplicate contacts, and actions that were already scheduled. The expected behavior should be explicit and reviewed for the market where the agent operates.

02

Test exclusions before the first message

The agent should apply account exclusions, suppression lists, customer rules, and contact constraints before outreach begins. A well-written message does not repair a send that should never have happened.

Record which rule blocked the action and the state the agent received. This separates a policy failure from missing or stale input data.

03

A handoff needs context and authority

Human escalation should specify the trigger, the owner, the context transferred, and which automated actions stop. Test ambiguous cases where the agent should ask for help rather than continue, as well as cases where unnecessary escalation would create operational load.

The receiving person needs the buyer state, relevant conversation, commitments, tool results, and reason for escalation. A generic notification without this context moves the failure instead of resolving it.

04

Treat legal requirements as market-specific inputs

Outbound requirements vary by jurisdiction, channel, relationship, and campaign. Product tests should encode the organization's reviewed rules and retain evidence that the agent followed them. Simulation is not a substitute for legal review.

In the United States, the FTC states that commercial email recipients must have a clear way to opt out and that senders remain responsible for work done on their behalf. This makes stop behavior and vendor oversight operational requirements, not copywriting preferences.
